Maine was amazing; can't wait to share pictures. Being at the Farm has been therapeutic for me; so good to be home, and be with friends, and be away from Ohio, and work, and summer reading, and my ordinary day life.

Found this old list I compiled some time back and it felt appropos this week, so I will share it until I have time to post about the trip and share pictures galore!

For anyone who has just recently gotten out of a relationship, some songs/anthems to rock to:
  • Heartless, Kanye West This song is priceless. Best line? "How could you be so Dr. Evil?"
  • Bad Romance, Lady Gaga Lady G has the market on hurt with this, the first of my three choices. The title says it all.
  • Speechless, Lady Gaga Thank you Gaga, thank you.
  • Paparazzi, Lady Gaga Making stalking cool enough to dance to.
  • Single Ladies (Put a ring on it), Beyonce This song calls to be turned up really loud. I only dance to this in my black unitard with my closest friends.
  • Don't stand so close to me, Sting Nothing like making it really weird on this day of all days--ever listen to these lyrics? This song is about all kinds of bad, bad love!
  • Hot n' cold, Katy Perry This song is just an anthem. Nuf' said.
  • Lessons learned, Ray Lamontagne Betrayal.
  • Jolene, Ray Lamontagne, Ray, how do you make even being, "face down in a ditch, with booze in my hair and blood on my lips" sound sexy?
  • Wild World, Cat Stevens, For those who can wish their leaving lover well.
  • Can't get next to you, The Temptations. This song rocks.
  • Sound of Settling, Death Cab for Cutie. "And I'll sit and wonder of every love that could have been, if I'd only thought of something charming to say."
  • 1901, Phoenix
  • Little Lion Man, Mumford & Sons, "It's not your fault but mine. It was your heart on the line, I really fucked it up this time, didn't I my dear? Didn't I, my dear?" Great apology.
  • I and love and you, The Avett Brothers, "Three words that became hard to say: I and love and you." Marvelous.
  • Thriller, Michael Jackson, For all the times I've been on a date and he turned into a zombie.You're welcome.
Therapeutic, but not quite like this.

eggnog with lighter fluid and other cherished Christmas memories

I started digging to find my favorite Christmas-esque scenes/lines from movies and I was pleased with what I found. In spirit of my 14's lists, here goes: 1. Charles De Mar: "Ah, come on! It's Christmas Eve! I could be home right now, drinking this *monster* eggnog my brother makes with lighter fluid." ~ Better Off Dead I also love the present opening scene on Christmas day, where his mother is dressed like a reindeer, his father gets an ardvark jacket and the kids get freezer dinners. Pan out to the neighbors Christmas when the French foreign exchange student gets a framed picture of Ricky. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! 2. When Zuzu says to George Bailey, "Look, daddy! sample retirement acceptance letter

The hardest part of being the Director in a small library is that we don't have an HR person, so on top of everything else we do we also get to do the paperwork for the new hires, and retires. Thank God for the internet or these processes would take a lot longer!  One of my board members pointed out that though I'd been informed of staff retirements, I had to officially accept them with a letter...I am finding that a paper trail is an important thing. So, I found a short and simple letter on one university's HR website (sorry forgot which!?) and honed it to work for us. Attached is my sample of a retirement letter.  Is anyone else out there going through this process too?

Juvenile Collection Librarian in a college setting?

This afternoon the Human Resources lady at the university (the one who helped me fill out all my paperwork when I was hired in) called our library, looking for the name of an author for a children's book. She did not provide an explanantion, rather just told me about how someone had told her about this book. As it is a children's book, I assumed that it might be a gift for one of the girls who just went out on pregnancy leave. (Her) Now, I can't remember the name of the author. (Me) Well, ok, what is the name of the book? (Her) The Very Hungry Caterpillar . (Me) Oh, that is Eric Carle, he is one of my favorites. I actually collect his books. I collect all children's books.
