on allergies and work

Nearing the end of the week and I am finally starting to feel better. I haven’t been sick, but rather my spring/summer allergies have descended upon me to annoy the shit out of me. It doesn’t bother me that I have allergies…it pisses me off that I only have allergies in Michigan. When I lived in Massachusettes at the farm my allergies dissapeared, leaving me to believe that my allergies do not in fact stem from ragweed, pollen, pet dander, or the like; but rather stem from my contempt for the state of Michigan...and it's state bird!

Not feeling good makes me feel all homesick too. So, I felt homesick for the farm and wished that I was sitting on the couch at Avalon (hope you don't mind that I fantasize about being sick at your house Mummy), sipping hot tea, wrapped in a warm blanket with the sun pouring onto me through the windows looking out at Main House.

And what sucks too about being sick is not having health insurance. Since I can't afford a doctors visit and a perscription sans insurance I have been feeling crappy and mopey all week with no hope of a faster relief; and yet somehow thankful too that I never get sick and really need to go to the doctor. That would suck.

Work has not slowed down to allow for my junky-feeling-ed-ness, but has continued on at its crazy pace. I swear I don't know where the weeks go.

Work at Library X has been marvelous. I continue to love it here and love working with the kids, and love working on the upcoming Summer Reading program. I also love that I have a $16,000 budget to spend on books on CD, DVDs, read-a-longs (books w/CDs that read the story), and Playaways (Playaways are like books on CD minus the CD. Playaways are about the size of ipods and contain the whole book on them. All patrons do is provide their own ear buds, and change the battery if it dies).

This week I spent some of my budget on some new playaways for the library and was so excited today when I came in to find the first batch had arrived. Titles include: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/Charlie and the Glass Elevator; Peter Pan; Huckleberry Finn and The Giver.

I am currently working on a display that will draw attention to the new load of read-a-longs that I just ordered and are all processed and waiting to be checked-in for the first time. I want to draw attention to the fact that we have some great things to offer. I am focusing on the "Read-a-longs are great because..." approach. We'll see.

Well, lunch is over and I have rambled far too long.

good thing you bought playaways for kids because I don't think adults can figure them out. there's only one moving part, the door you remove to replace the battery and our patrons can still get that wrong. feel better.
Thanks Effing. I wasn't sure how much I wanted to focus on the playaways, then I realized that over Spring Break every single children's playaway was checked out. So, I thought. Get more.

Yeah...the adults here are coming around. SLOWLY. ;)

Feeling better. Thanks.

Another reason why Massachusetts is great: If you can't afford health insurance, the state GIVES it to you. Nice, pretty government... puuuurrrrr
