busy as Christmas elves

I haven't been posting much lately because things have been so crazy busy! Tomorrow is the last day of our silent auction; we asked businesses and community members to donate something that we could auction off, with all proceeds going to the library (hopefully toward new computers!) Stay tuned for our final $ count! Tomorrow is also the end of our holiday fines-sweep-clear for those patrons who donate new winter gear for kiddos.  Weeding still goes on! I weeded out the most tattered and gnawed on kids' board books--bought a batch of new ones to replace the old; weeded the adult non-fic, taking out anything that hasn't circed since 2004, with some exceptions. Funniest find? An old VHS manual from the early 1980s. Building maintenance issues arising with the boiler and a broken drain. Still meeting with people in the greater community and college to see how we can help each other out! Storytimes out the wazzoo!! I used to feel beat at OHCity when I did two a week as n...

storytimes, Africa, Scotland and Beowulf--just a typical week

Haven't written about life in Library La La Land in a bit. Things have been busy. We began our Fall programs last week and work has been crazy. We are still getting settled into our new office space, unpacking and repositioning things to make it cozy, since our space is a little smaller. My storytimes are going great. I am again doing the baby group (newborns-14mos olds) and again doing the younger toddlers (15mos-23mos). My babies group is ok; the Moms are all a little quiet, but my toddler group is fantastic! I have very participation-based parents/grandparents coming, and the group has been huge for the past 2 weeks. The baby group is working with the themes: colors, shapes and numbers, so I have incorporated a couple of my favorites (some Eric Carle books) : Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Polar bear, polar bear and My very first book of numbers. The toddler group is working with the themes: Fairy tales & Nursery rhymes, so we have been using some classic stories: The Gingerbread M...

on allergies and work

Nearing the end of the week and I am finally starting to feel better. I haven’t been sick, but rather my spring/summer allergies have descended upon me to annoy the shit out of me. It doesn’t bother me that I have allergies…it pisses me off that I only have allergies in Michigan. When I lived in Massachusettes at the farm my allergies dissapeared, leaving me to believe that my allergies do not in fact stem from ragweed, pollen, pet dander, or the like; but rather stem from my contempt for the state of Michigan...and it's state bird! Not feeling good makes me feel all homesick too. So, I felt homesick for the farm and wished that I was sitting on the couch at Avalon (hope you don't mind that I fantasize about being sick at your house Mummy ), sipping hot tea, wrapped in a warm blanket with the sun pouring onto me through the windows looking out at Main House. And what sucks too about being sick is not having health insurance. Since I can't afford a doctors visit and a persc...
