on failure

I read an interview with Kevin Costner when I was something like 15 years old, and still think about his quote, which I paraphrase here, "People in America are so afraid of failure that they don't even try."   I took this quote to heart because I was afraid of so many things at 15, and as many others are, I was so scared of missing out on the rest of my life. I've reminded myself of this quote as I've gone snorkeling--I'm scared of the ocean; as I applied for jobs I felt were outside of my reach--they were, and I didn't get the jobs, but I got the interview and the experience; as I took on the role as Library Director with minimal experience; as I opened my heart and trusted ChicagoBoy. Each day is rife with opportunities for our own personal greatness, not by achieving at everything we seek out to do, but rather for being brave enough to try. I loved this video so much. eggnog with lighter fluid and other cherished Christmas memories

I started digging to find my favorite Christmas-esque scenes/lines from movies and I was pleased with what I found. In spirit of my 14's lists, here goes: 1. Charles De Mar: "Ah, come on! It's Christmas Eve! I could be home right now, drinking this *monster* eggnog my brother makes with lighter fluid." ~ Better Off Dead I also love the present opening scene on Christmas day, where his mother is dressed like a reindeer, his father gets an ardvark jacket and the kids get freezer dinners. Pan out to the neighbors Christmas when the French foreign exchange student gets a framed picture of Ricky. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! 2. When Zuzu says to George Bailey, "Look, daddy! Teacher says, every time a bell rings, an Angel gets his wings." George quietly agrees, "Attaboy, Clarence," as "Auld Lang Syne" rings out. That scene makes me cry everytime. once I was a gardener

"But now in September the garden has cooled, and with it my possessiveness.  The sun warms my back instead of beating on my head ... The harvest has dwindled, and I have grown apart from the intense midsummer relationship that brought it on." -  Robert Finch  Stumbled upon this quote, and was struck dumb with a sadness I feel for the garden I once had. I love our cozy little condo--we spent so much time during our courtship there; it was a place of refuge when I was tired of library life in Ohio; it's our first home as a married couple. But, our condo has no space for a garden, and this makes me sad.  I think of the hours of time I spent on my knees planting, pulling weeds, picking produce. My garden was often one of the few spots were I went to feel alone in a community of 100 people; the place where I had the silence to day dream. I miss the day dreams dreamed there because the day dreams of 20-something me are so different than those of 30-something me. *sigh*...
